Tim’s mom (Margaret) died four years ago, but this would have been her 97th birthday. Tim and his siblings chose to honor her birthday by making her famous caramel rolls (each in their own home).
Tim was in a hurry so he tried them in the crock pot – see the results on the second picture! (Did I ever tell you that he has a hard time following recipes?) … so the next day he made them again exactly according to the recipe – and they were delicious!
I have the recipe written below, but first I wanted to share this page out of a digital scrapbook titled “In the Kitchen with Margaret”. This was Tim’s sister Mary Burks’ (a demonstrator in Oakland, CA) idea and she did most of the work with a bit of input from the rest of us.
It was finished just as Margaret went into hospice and it was the most meaningful thing we could have done!
Margaret was famous for her cooking and her hospitality, so the book has her recipes on the right side of the pages and family photos on the left – starting with her wedding and ending with the last family group photo we had.
I spent the last month of Margaret’s life at her bedside and as she got weaker and couldn’t talk, visitors would still look at this book and talk with her about their memories – what a precious time.
You can see more of the pages by reading my original post here.
Margaret’s Caramel Rolls
2 loaves of frozen Rhodes bread or frozen rolls. Cut the partially thawed rolls into 3 pieces and the bread into small pieces.
In the bottom of a 9 x 13 pan, melt 1/2 cup butter, 1 cup dark brown sugar, 2 T white Karo syrup and 2 T milk. Place the cut up bread or rolls over this. Cover and put in the refrigerator over night. Remove the rolls from the refrigerator in the morning soon enough so they can rise – about an hour. Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes. If using a glass pan look at the bottom of the rolls to see if they are lightly browned.
Turn upside down onto a large platter so the caramel mixture will run down the rolls.
What a great gift!
I think this is one of the best gifts I have ever had a part in giving – so thank you Mary!
And, if reading this has sparked in interest in you – let me know! I would love to hear about what you are going to create!
I love what you do. You and Tim are such an inspiration.
Thank you for the lovely comment, Gaylene!
Wonderful idea and memory!
Nothing better than recipes handed down through the years from family members. Thank you for sharing. Looking forward to trying this recipe.
I agree!
