As I was sorting through some old papers, I stumbled upon a treasure—a family Christmas newsletter from 1990. You can imagine the laughter and nostalgia it brought back as we read through the stories and memories we had long forgotten. It inspired us to create this episode and remind ourselves—and you—how powerful it can be to capture and preserve those family moments, no matter how small.
Looking through this newsletter, we couldn’t help but marvel at how different things were back then. The clip art, the printed photos we carefully glued on, and even the Apple IIe computer we used to type everything—it was all so charmingly “cutting-edge” at the time! Each of us had a role in putting it together, from writing little articles to laying out the pages, and it’s amazing how those contributions became a time capsule of our lives. It’s a reminder that you don’t need fancy tools or perfection to create something meaningful; it’s the stories and heart behind it that count.
One of the funniest discoveries was Josiah’s article about skiing, where he joked about some of us skiing “like rusty bolts” (his dad, of course!). Then there were stories about our driveway art fair, where we raised $13.85 in ten-cent tickets to buy books for the library, and the bookplates that forever commemorated our efforts. These moments weren’t just fun memories—they were a glimpse into our creativity and connection as a family. It’s amazing how these small, everyday moments can hold such meaning when we take the time to document them.
So here’s our encouragement to you: find your own way to capture family memories, whether it’s through newsletters, scrapbooks, journals, or even handmade cards. It doesn’t have to be perfect, and it doesn’t have to happen every year—it’s never too late to start. These little keepsakes can become treasures that help you laugh, cry, and remember the moments that make life so rich. And if you’ve got a story or memory you’d like to share, we’d love to hear it. Let’s keep creating and celebrating these meaningful connections together!
