Did you ever give a gift where the person has to open one box after another to finally get the gift?
This is a fun, and very pretty, take on that! Start with the largest box (made from a 12″ square of card stock) …
which opens to reveal the middle sized box (made from a 9″ square of card stock)….
which opens to reveal the smallest box (from a 7 1/2″ square of card stock) …
which opens to finally reveal the gift!
Each of these boxes could be used alone too, of course.
The Exploding Scrapbook Box!
And … a great idea is to turn this into a scrapbook box. Attach the three boxes at the bases and then decorate both sides of each flap with photos or writing. For a friend you have known for a long time, add old time photos and and stories and you will have a great time reminiscing! If its from a group of people, have each person take a square to write a message – the list goes on!
These boxes are very easy to make. Because you fold them in thirds, I like to make life easy by choosing easy measurements to divide by thirds!
The largest box is 12″ x 12″ scored at 4″ all around.
The middle box is 9″ x 9″ scored at 3″ all around.
The smallest box is 7 1/2″ x 7 1/2″ scored at 2 1/2″ all around.
When all sides have been scored, cut out the four corners.
The easiest way to remember how to figure out the cover size is to take the size of each square (for the smallest – 2 1/2″) and add 2″ (because the rim of the lid is 1″ all around) and then 1/16″ more so the cover will fit exactly on the box. It needs to be just that teeny bit bigger!
The final measurements for the boxes above are:
the large 4 ” square needs a 6 1/16″ square cover
the medium 3″ square needs a 5 1/16″ cover
and the small 2 1/2″ square needs a 4 9/16″ cover.
Cut just four scored lines on the cover and fold over the ends like this.
Now, decorate the box and your are finished! Wasn’t that easy?
Now … what will you put inside?
