My favorite breakfast story in Norway is, of course, a fish story. The first breakfast there I experienced the strangest thing: caviar (spelled Kaviar there) in a tube! Weird, but a great way to start experiencing Norwegian cuisine!
Another popular breakfast (or any other meal) is Norwegian heart shaped waffles with lingonberry sauce. They thought it was strange that I loved putting syrup on my waffles.
The other dish in the picture is rommegrot, a dish that my uncle Ole (from Norway) used to make at our farmhouse when I was a kid.
One of the things they do with a pancake is to turn it into svele, a pancake folded over with butter, cream and sugar. This is a famous meal on the ferry boats.
The most popular breakfast consisted of 3 kinds of cheeses, 2 or 3 sliced meats, liver pate, bread, juice, and, most important, coffee.
I enjoyed those breakfasts, but I also enjoyed coming home to a bowl of Cheerios.
I must comment on the waffles. The generally are not for breakfast but more often served as a dessert or a snack. Served with a dollop of jam they are so yummy!!
Oh Tim…. it's good to hear from your perspective. I've missed you! Thanks for sharing a bit about Norway and your fun memories.
