Today, on Tuesdays with Tim, I am sharing my way of making perfect oatmeal! I make this often, but never more often that this past week after my dental surgery when I have been on a "soft" diet! That has been quite boring…..but then, back to the oatmeal!
I get up at 4:00 am for my job at Starbucks where I start at 4:45. I like to have a hearty breakfast before I leave for work, but since I don't really have much time, this oatmeal is the perfect meal. It cooks in the crock pot overnight and its right there ready for me in the morning! I always make extra that I can just reheat on other days.
My sister Mary Burks (who is also a Stampin' Up! demonstrator) was the person that got me hooked on steel cut oats. The problem with making that, for me, is that you have to cook it for 30 minutes, watching it carefully and stirring.
One day when I stopped at Trader Joe's, my favorite grocery store, to get more oats, I saw a sign about making steel cut oats in the crock pot. I talked with one of team members and learned how to do it. Ever since that day, this is the way I make my perfect oatmeal:
4 cups water, salted to taste
1 cup steel cut oats
Stir together in the crock pot.
Start on high for an hour (if I have the time)
Turn to low and let it cook overnight.
Its ready!
Since I don't do dairy, I add coconut oil and coconut milk which might sound strange, but its good and healthy. (Not to be perfect, I also add sugar.) Bananas, raisins, and anything else are also great additions.
Give this a try and let me know what you think.
Great idea, Tim – we are going to try that! Of course, to be truly "perfect", the oatmeal would be prepared by someone else, like on a cruise ship! :o)
I totally agree about the cruise ship!
