I have an easy way to remember how to make explosion cards! Watch as I share two different ways to make these with the Thoughtful Branches Bundle … but that comes at the end. First, the cards!
Here is the first Thoughtful Branches Explosion Card:
Pretty plain on the outside…
but it opens into this:
The copy paper used for this card is an 8″ square. The base card is your regular 5 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ size.
Here is a card I shared a couple of years ago.
The original post (and a video tutorial from long ago) can be found here.
Now … a trivia question! Can you name this stamp set? (I can’t!)
I made a bunch of these cards for swapping at convention years ago – and I actually saved one!
This inside of this card is a 5″ square and the card front measures 4″ x 3″.
In the video at the end of this blog post, I share my favorite explosion card of all time – and it wasn’t made by me! (You won’t want to miss it!)
Now for the second type of explosion card.
This one is just a bit easier. Here is is open:
and here is another – again made with the Thoughtful Branches stamp set!
and with it open:
For these cards, I used a 7″ square for the folding.
The base of the card is 4 1/4″ square and the other layers – starting with the Whisper White layer on top are a 3″ square, 3 1/4″ square, 3 3/4″ square, and 4″ square.
And one more card from years ago … this is the same fold used for the graduation cap! This time it is just 2″ square.
And when you lift up the cap:
Hopefully this has gotten you thinking about all of the things you can do with these folds.
One more thing before I do the storytelling….

Hi Karen! The older set is called Rose Rhapsody! No, I don’t have photographic memory, I found it in an old catalog.
Just love the Explosion cards. Keep up the great work and new ideas.
Thank you so much, Sandy!
Thanks Chris – I never even thought of that!
Thanks. I had been trying to figure out the folders for a while and you made it simple.
Love all your cards, rainy day today so will make some of your cards. Thank You!!
Hi Karen – I love your comment – I will think of you when it rains! What a good time to stay inside and make cards!
What perfect timing, don’t you think? Thanks Deborah – that doesn’t happen too often!
I enjoyed your video very much – how lovely to be sitting on the back porch making cards.
Marie
thank you so much Marie!
