Paper weaving is one of those techniques that brings back instant memories of grade school projects—but it turns out it makes beautiful handmade cards too. Using simple strips of patterned paper, you can create woven backgrounds that add texture, color, and interest without needing complicated tools or techniques.
What I love most about this idea is how relaxing it feels. Just choose a few papers you love, weave the strips together, and watch the pattern come to life. It’s also a wonderful way to use up leftover scraps that are too pretty to throw away.
Depending on the papers you choose, your cards can feel playful, elegant, cozy, or modern. It’s amazing how much variety comes from such a simple idea. Sometimes the techniques we loved years ago still have a little magic left in them.
I suggest watching the video for more detailed instructions.
- Score a regular 8-1/2″ x 5-1/2″ card base in half and fold.
- Put a line of adhesive along one of the longer edges of a 4-1/2″ x 2″ copy paper. Adhere the edges of the six 1/2″ x 5-1/2″ DSP strips on the copy paper. Then start weaving in the shorter 1/2″ x 4-1/2″ DSP strips. Adhere this on the 4” x 5-1/4” cardstock mat making sure to put adhesive all around the edges. Trim off the excess for a cleaner look and adhere on the card base.
- Add your accent and sentiment piece.
There are so many ways to finish up the look of the woven card.
I used the Party Banner Dies for my card base. The strips are from the Moonlit Flora Designer Series Paper.
You can also use dies to frame the weave. I used the Sweet Words & Labels Dies for the frame.
Here’s a monochromatic look with Hydrangea Hue. The frame is die cut from Everyday Arches Dies.
For a rugged look, just weave the strips with random spacing and tear off the edges before adhering on the card base.
Look how cute this picnic mat! The strips are from the Bloom Boutique Designer Series Paper.
