Have you ever looked at a card (or scrapbook page) and thought, “It needs something more.”
I’ve been there too, and I’m excited to share a technique that adds that special touch—torn edges!
Torn edges can give your projects a lovely aged look or a rugged texture, depending on how you tear the paper. It’s a super simple technique—just grab some patterned paper and let your creativity flow. Experiment with different tearing styles and see how they can transform your designs.
Ask a kid to tear and they just go for it! Ask an adult, and it’s how? I want it to look exactly like that. – that’s the beauty of it. It won’t. Each time you tear, you will get a little different look so enjoy it! Embrace the happy accidents that occur and you will start seeing lots of possibilities that just might surprise you!
Here’s to celebrating uniqueness!
And you can play with layers too! Look how adding a third layer on the accent piece on this card gives it more depth. The paper is from the Lily Pond Lane Designer Series Paper.
And another bonus is that you can use a 6 x 6 paper and cut it into three 2” strips and use one for the inside.
The first two strips from the 2023-2025 In Color Designer Series Paper are used for the card front.
And the remaining strip is added on the inside of the card (you can torn the strip too to match the card front).
How to Make Torn Edges Card
- Score an 8-1/2″ x 5-1/2″ card base in half and fold.
- Prepare two 2″ x 5″ DSP pieces and torn one edge of each strip.
- Adhere the DSP strips on a 4″ x 5-1/4″ piece of Basic White (torn edges facing towards the center). Then adhere this to the card front.
- Add your accent piece/sentiment.
How easy is that?! Now, let’s take a look at a couple more cards.
Look how beautiful the accent of this card is! It’s giving a framed picture look! And it’s from the same paper pack used (Take to the Sky)
Using fussy cut images from the Flowering Zinnias Designer Series Paper as accent piece.
Play with another look and try changing from a white background to a colored background! The paper used is from the Bright and Beautiful Designer Series Paper pack.
This is another sample of using a colored background. Notice how one of the strips from the Nature’s Sweetness Designer Series Paper is smaller compared to the other – just another simple idea for changing up the look!
And one more idea! Try the sponging technique on the edges to make a difference.
Notice how sponging makes the torn edges pop a little more!
