In this episode, we’re talking all about food and the role it plays in our Christmas traditions.
When I suggested this topic, we realized how differently we all think about holiday meals—some of us remember specific dishes, while others recall the memories and moments that happened around the table. From Christmas morning sticky buns to that one ambitious seven-course meal planned by a junior high chef in the family, food has always been both a creative outlet and a way to bring everyone together.
We share some of our favorite stories, like the year we decided every Christmas Eve meal had to be completely new—no repeats allowed! It sparked so much creativity and excitement, especially as the kids got older and took on more of the cooking themselves. We also reminisce about meals at Grandma Margaret’s tiny apartment, where she perfected her two signature dishes to keep entertaining simple and joyful. And of course, we laugh over funny moments like the infamous “Norwegian flashlight” prank gift and the unique meals our Scandinavian heritage brought to the table.
What stands out most is how food creates space for connection—whether it’s welcoming a stranger who had nowhere to go, sharing a meal in our garage during the pandemic, or reviving traditions like lefse and rhubarb crisp. Food may not always be the star of the show, but it has a way of bringing people together and keeping the holidays special. We’d love to hear about the dishes, traditions, and stories that make your Christmas memorable, so don’t forget to share them with us!
Now come share your stories with us over at Stamping on the Back Porch.
